Despite the imminent influx of arms, the Dodgers remain active on the trade

The Dodgers made a surprising move by parting ways with veteran pitcher James Paxton, who was designated for assignment on Sunday. This decision came just a day after Paxton delivered one of his strongest outings of the season, pitching five innings and striking out seven in a victory over the Red Sox, improving his record to 8-2.

On Monday, in the midst of a looming roster shuffle, the Dodgers opted to move on from Paxton despite their ongoing struggles with starting pitching depth. ESPN's Alden Gonzalez noted that this was an unusual move given the team's injury-riddled rotation, which had relied on Paxton's experience to stabilize an inexperienced group. However, with multiple key pitchers nearing a return, the Dodgers seemingly made the call to clear space by cutting ties with the veteran left-hander.

By designating Paxton for assignment, the Dodgers now have a seven-day window to seek a trade before he becomes available on waivers. Given the high demand for starting pitching across the league, there is a strong chance they can secure a prospect in return rather than risk losing him for nothing. Paxton, who signed a one-year, $7 million deal that escalated to $13 million due to performance-based incentives, had been an innings-eater for L.A., though control issues plagued his performance. Across 89 innings this season, he struggled with command, leading the league with 48 walks while posting a 4.43 ERA.

The Dodgers' decision comes as a wave of reinforcements is set to bolster their rotation. Clayton Kershaw is on track to return from shoulder surgery later this week, while Tyler Glasnow is expected back after a back issue sidelined him for over two weeks. Top prospect River Ryan, who dealt with shoulder troubles earlier in the season, was recently tabbed for his MLB debut against the Giants. Additionally, Walker Buehler is nearing a return from a hip injury, and Bobby Miller remains a candidate for a big-league comeback if he regains form in Triple-A. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is also expected to rejoin the team before the season's end.

Reports suggest they are in the mix for a high-caliber starter, with sources linking them and the Orioles as serious contenders for Tigers ace Tarik Skubal—should Detroit decide to move him. L.A. has also been frequently mentioned in connection with White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet. Additionally, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the Dodgers have engaged in discussions with the White Sox about a blockbuster deal potentially involving Crochet, outfielder Luis Robert Jr., and reliever Michael Kopech. Meanwhile, Detroit remains in trade talks with both the Orioles and Dodgers regarding Skubal.
